Teach for China (TFC) is the first and only organization to pair outstanding graduates from top universities in the US and China in a long-term service initiative.

After the Fellowship

Teach For China believes that the two years that Fellows serve as teachers in the classroom represent only the beginning of their potential to have transformational impact. As Teach For China puts its theory of change into action, it will work to develop a movement of young leaders across a variety of sectors that share a common commitment to end educational inequity in China. In this respect, Teach For China has derived substantial inspiration and support from Teach For America, whose network of more than 17,000 alumni includes many of the most dynamic and influential figures in the current movement for education reform in the United States.

As Teach For China has developed as an organization, former Fellows have provided invaluable assistance to Teach For China and the broader movement to end education inequity. Alumni assist with outreach, recruiting and selection, and program development. Many Fellows have stayed on with the organization following the completion of their term of service. Some of these have remained in the field as Program Managers, where they leverage their program participation to provide support and mentorship to current Fellows, while others now support the core operation of the organization out of the main office in Beijing.

This year, Teach For China established a formal Alumni Impact department, which is carrying out a long-term strategy to build a strong network of alumni working for educational equity across many professional sectors. Teach For China's Alumni Impact team will work to support Fellows in a number of ways:

Support Fellow Professional Development

Ensure that all Fellows continue to build crucial leadership and professional skills during their two-year commitment through:

  • Regular leadership training as part of Fellows’ ongoing Professional Development regimen
  • Connecting Fellows with leaders from a variety of professional fields to serve as mentors
  • Providing Fellows with a range of summer internship opportunities following the completion of their first and second teaching years
  • Position Fellows for Success After the Fellowship

Strengthen the pathways by which Fellows can ascend to positions of leadership in a variety of sectors following the completion of the Fellowship by:

  • Establishing long-term partnerships with universities to strengthen pathways for Fellows to attain graduate degrees
  • Building relationships with top employers in business, government, education, and the non-profit sectors to position Fellows for post-service success
  • Engage with leaders in Chinese government, academia, business, and other fields to invest them in supporting Teach For China alumni
  • Providing general consultation and support for Fellows on graduate school and career opportunities following the completion of the Fellowship
  • Teach For China believes that alumni working in a range of diverse professional fields can all have a profound impact upon the fight for education equity. Sectors in which Teach For China alumni operate include:

    Education Policy

Alumni working in education policy champion student-centric classroom approaches, rigorous assessment, and inclusive education. They benefit from Teach For China’s comprehensive internal teacher development program and its contacts throughout the education sector.

    Business

As business leaders in the global economy, alumni bring unparalleled management and leadership abilities to top firms. They understand the importance of corporate social responsibility and work to build links between the corporate world and under-resourced communities.

    Sino-American Relations

Former Fellows pursuing careers that relate to foreign affairs serve as advocates for strengthened ties between China, the United States, and the rest of the world. They benefit from cross-cultural relationships developed through their terms of service, as well as Teach For China’s cross-cultural training.
