The Fellowship
Teach For China Fellows serve for two years as full-time, core-subject teachers in some of the poorest areas in China.
Fellows assume a range of responsibilities to produce results in the following areas:
Classroom Leadership
Teach For China Fellows are on the frontlines of the effort to eliminate educational inequity, serving in some of China’s most under-resourced classrooms. Fellows teach a full course load of core-curricular subjects that may include English (for American Fellows), math, the sciences, and Chinese (for Chinese Fellows). Fellows work tirelessly to implement innovative, student-centered approaches to learning. They are enthusiastic, driven, thoughtful, and relentless in their approach to working with students to help them develop the skills and mindsets needed to succeed beyond the classroom. Our Fellows are leaders in the truest sense – their classroom practices and individual efforts inspire students to exceed standards often seen as unattainable.
Our Fellows work in collaboration with local teachers, Fellowship team members, and Teach For China staff to develop and apply teaching approaches that generate measurable progress. In concert with their local peers and superiors, Fellows adapt curricula to fit the unique needs of the students they serve. Fellows also work individually with struggling students outside the classroom, targeting their approaches toward the specific weaknesses of at-risk children, and engaging students’ families. Teach For China’s locally-based ongoing support team is uniquely positioned to support Fellows in these efforts and help integrate internationally recognized best practices with proven local teaching methods. Training and Support make regular visits to classrooms, gather comprehensive data about student performance and integrate that data into targeted, individualized feedback to help each Fellow become the best teacher they can be. Throughout their terms of service, Fellows are held to the highest standards of teacher performance and are expected to generate measurable progress with their students.
School & Community Leadership
Teach for China Fellows are integral members of their placement school communities, and work to invest families, local leaders, and other community stakeholders in creating supportive environments that enable students to achieve. Past Fellows have created school libraries, English conversation clubs for students, and community theater projects. In addition, Fellows also pursue numerous projects designed to help schools increase their capacity for delivering high-quality education, including English language enrichment courses for local teachers, development of high-quality student assessments, and assistance with grant proposals and applications. Teach For China knows that community engagement is critical to its mission and supports Fellows in their efforts to pursue innovative projects.
